Mackwood Publishing Consultants is owned and operated by Robert Mackwood, a publishing veteran with over 30 years in the publishing industry.
He has had a varied career within the book business; as a literary agent, as VP of Marketing, a senior publicist, a member of the Board of Directors at Seal Books in Toronto and just recently as Publisher of his own self-publishing business imprint Brilliant Idea Books. Robert’s official titles include:

- Vice-President and Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Bantam/Doubleday Canada in Toronto
- Corporate and Public Relations Director at Contemporary Communications in Vancouver
- Publicity Co-ordinator at Stanton & MacDougall/Raincoast Books in Vancouver
At Bantam/Doubleday he directed a multi-million dollar publicity and marketing department and worked personally for many high profile authors and personalities including Fredrick Forsythe, Shirley MacLaine, Margaret Atwood, Farley Mowat, Terry Waite, and Terry Prachett. Robert worked on two Canadian Prime Minister books – The Right Honourable Kim Campbell and The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien. He returned with his family to their West Coast roots in 1996 as a book consultant and eventually for ten years as the Director of Contemporary Management, the largest non-fiction author agency in Western Canada.
Robert purchased the agency in 2005, renaming it the Seventh Avenue Literary Agency. Seventh Avenue is known for its award winning and diverse non-fiction client list, and represents over 40 writers with rights sales in Canada, US and the UK, and, using a large team of sub-agents, translation sales in over 15 countries.
The Agency has negotiated over 150 book, film, and television contracts and has attended many of the major international book trade fairs including Frankfurt, London, and Book Expo conventions in the US and Canada to meet with editors, publishers, and sub-agents on behalf of the Agency’s clients.
In addition to his work as a book consultant, Robert Mackwood launched Brilliant Idea Books in 2013, a self-publishing imprint specifically for business category.
Robert teaches a regular course on The Role of the Agent through the University of British Columbia Writing School, and appears on panels and at workshops throughout the year.
He is available for half or full day courses on a variety of publishing subjects including self-publishing.
